Why is a’string’ literal faster than’someString’?

If you have
#define MYSTRING “asdf”

Then you could do
char s[MYSTRING];

to get the string representation of “asdf” in an array.
My question: if this code is faster:
char foo = “asdf”;
char s[foo];
