An outbreak of Clostridium perfringens necrotizing enteritis (CPNE) in 20 pigs was studied at an abattoir (A) and a pig farm (F) in Japan. The morbidity occurred in about 20% and mortality in approximately 80% of the 20 pigs, while none in a group of 6 pigs in an experimental pig farm (F) that had been kept on a C. perfringens contaminated diet (5 x 10(9) cfu C. perfringens/g of feed). In the pigs that developed CPNE, the affected intestine was of small size (1–8 cm in diameter), the villi were attenuated and the enterocytes were shrunken and darkening. In many places the enterocytes lost the microvilli, and the space immediately outside the lumen was occupied by degenerate enterocytes with pyknotic nuclei, and the enterocytes on the surface of the villi were sloughed and disappeared. These lesions were accompanied by abundant neutrophils and macrophages in the mucosa and by infiltration of these inflammatory cells into the submucosa.1. Field of the Invention
