Field of the Invention
The present invention is directed to an improved device for measuring the position and orientation of a person’s body and more specifically to measure the position of a person’s head relative to the cervical vertebrae and upper torso.
2. Background Information
Devices used for measuring the position of a person’s head relative to his or her cervical vertebrae and upper torso during the performance of a head/neck exercise program are generally known in the art. In particular, U.S. Pat. No. 4,726,644 to Wiederholt, Jr. discloses a head position and orientation measuring device that attaches to a person’s head. The device includes a light emitter and a light receiver used in connection with a light measuring device with a calibration standard. The light beams are directed to reflect off objects at different distances from the device and an output is shown on a dial. The light beams and the light receivers are mounted on the device in various ways and are attached to the upper arm and head along a line that extends from the head and over the upper arm and torso of the person’s body.
The device of Wiederholt does not indicate any specific location on the person’s body on which to mount the device. Furthermore, since the line connecting the head, arm and upper torso to the head measuring device passes over the torso, the upper arms and upper torso of the person may affect the person’s measurement by partially blocking the line between the head and the body. Thus, the device of Wiederholt is not suitable for some head/neck exercises such as the Cobra. However, the device of Wiederholt is still used for most head/neck exercises such as head rotations. In fact, the device of Wiederholt is even suitable for some head rotation exercises such as the Swimmer’s Swim and the Crossed Leg (C-Leg). Head rotation exercises such as the Swimmer’s Swim and the C-Leg require the head to be held in a fixed position and to rotate the head. In particular, in the C
