In a bid designed to restore trust in frozen food, and in anticipation of the end of the year, Australian Competition and Consumer Commission chairman Iain West asked on Friday that Australia’s eight major grocery chains stop calling their products “fresh” until they have “proved as such”.

A week ago, a report into an outbreak of salmonella found that ice cream from a frozen store – the biggest Australian provider – had passed bacteria testing. Two weeks earlier, consumers were told by the ACCC that an independent expert found that fruit supplied by another frozen store was also unsafe.
