Mayorkas, who is the seventh person to hold this position, has been under fire for his handling of various issues, leading to a tense hearing and a looming vote on his removal. Here’s what you need to know about the Mayorkas impeachment vote hearing.

Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas

Alejandro Mayorkas is the current US Secretary of Homeland Security, a position he has held since 2021. He is the first Latino and the first immigrant to lead the department, which oversees the nation’s border security, immigration enforcement, cybersecurity, disaster response, and counterterrorism efforts.

Mayorkas was born in Havana, Cuba, in 1959. His parents were Jewish refugees who escaped the Nazi persecution in Europe and later fled the communist regime in Cuba. They arrived in Miami, Florida, when Mayorkas was only a year old, and then moved to Los Angeles, California, where he grew up.

Mayorkas attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he majored in history and graduated with honors. He then went to Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, where he earned his law degree. He began his legal career as a federal prosecutor in California, handling cases involving white-collar crime, public corruption, and national security.

In 1998, President Bill Clinton appointed Mayorkas as the United States Attorney for the Central District of California, making him the youngest person to hold that position at the time.

As the Secretary of Homeland Security, Mayorkas faces many challenges and controversies. One of his main priorities is to address the ongoing immigration issues at the US-Mexico border, where a surge of migrants, especially unaccompanied children, has overwhelmed the capacity of border facilities and agencies.

Impeachment Advances for Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas in House

The impeachment process against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas is advancing in the House of Representatives.

The House Judiciary Committee held a hearing on Tuesday to examine the articles of impeachment that accuse Mayorkas of violating his oath of office and failing to uphold the law.

The committee is expected to vote on the articles next week, according to the House Republican leadership. Mayorkas and his allies have dismissed the impeachment attempt as a partisan stunt that has no merit.

Mayorkas and Democrats Respond

The impeachment process against Mayorkas has been met with strong resistance from the Democrats, who claim that it is a political stunt. They argue that the real reason behind the impeachment is not any legitimate grievance, but rather a partisan agenda.
